We’ve compiled some of our favorite moments from Ahead of the Times into a 3 minute highlight reel, so you don’t have to binge watch all 20 episodes if you don’t want to. Enjoy!

Egypt moves to arrest its Jon Stewart

Posted by tobymuresianu on Mar 30, 2013 in Clips, Travel

The government of Mohamed Morsi is moving to arrest one of its prominent critics – Bassem Youssef, a former doctor and now television personality who models his show after the Daily Show, which you may have seen him on.

Al Jazeera reports:

Youssef said he would hand himself over on Sunday, “unless they kindly send a police van today and save me the transportation hassle”

As a (sometimes) political comedian, I wish I had those kind of guts. It’s a reminder that as much as we as Americans revere people like Lenny Bruce, there are still comedians making sacrifices as great or greater than him today.

While Youssef obviously performs in Arabic, I was able to find a subtitled version of his show. While watching it, you notice a few things:

        • Even in translation it’s surprisingly funny (though of course there’s some Egyptian references you may not get)
        • You feel much more of connection to Egyptians than by reading banal news reports, and
        • He really does look like John Stewart.

Hopefully through this ordeal he’s able to draw more attention to the ridiculousness of those in power.

Holiday video for y’all

Merry Christmas – or if you’re not Christian, Merry War on Christmas!

Here’s my present to all of you. It’s a song parody I wrote of Jingle Bell Rock about the Fiscal Cliff. My friend Adam Campbell-Schmitt is the one singing, not me, so please give him the rock star treatment (quitting your job to follow him around, stalking him incessantly, etc) and not me.

Hope you enjoy it!

Clip of the day – Me

Posted by tobymuresianu on Sep 27, 2012 in Announcements, Clips

On a self-promotional note, I’ve posted a new clip online with a few jokes about traveling internationally. It’s a bit of a best-of set to send to bookers, so there’s a few jokes repeated from my other tapes (spoiler alert).

Enjoy (I hope)!

Clip of the Day: The Increasingly Poor Decision of Todd Margaret

Posted by tobymuresianu on Sep 24, 2012 in Clips

Hey everybody,

Here’s a clip from one of my favorite shows, the underrated IFC comedy The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret – an American show set in London and starring David Cross as a somewhat pathetic salesperson relocated to Britain.

You can see it on Netflix, but here’s two short clips:

Clip of the day: Brasseye

If any Americans out there want to be true comedy hipsters, check out Brasseye – a British tv show (1 hipster point) that only aired for six episodes (2 hipster points) in 1997 (3 hipster points) and as a bonus is pretty goddamn funny, especially if you like Adult Swim-y stuff. It’s basically a satire of 20/20 style news programs, with the most famous episode being an expose on Drugs.

Punk’d like an Egyptian

There are certain drawbacks to your government being in chaos – crime, a lack of basic services, etc. But it turns out there are also certain benefits – namely, completely unrestricted hidden camera shows!

If you need any proof, here’s a prank kidnapping from a new show in Egypt. It’s mostly in Arabic, but you can pretty much figure out what’s going on – skip ahead to 3:30 or so. You’ll never guess who the sponsor is.

You can read more about the show at The Blaze or Times of Israel, which reports a Moroccan religious official as saying “Even if this lying is for fun, it is still a sin. There is a saying by the prophet that condemns anyone who lies for the sake of making people laugh.”

May need to rework my act a little…

Hello, World

Posted by tobymuresianu on Jul 22, 2012 in Announcements, Clips

Hey everybody!

I’m proud to announce I’ve started a blog, which is internet shorthand for website last updated in 2009.

Nonetheless, I’m pretty excited – many times, while arguing with users in the comments section of other blogs, I thought, someday, maybe I will be the blogger people are comparing to Hitler. Knocking on wood.

Anyway, the plan is to post impressions of the places I go, tv shows/video clips I like from around the world, and other good stuff.

You can subscribe via RSS (feed link) if you use Google Reader or another RSS reader, or via email if you’d like to be updated with funny/interesting things to your inbox every so often – just fill in the box on the lower right side.

Here’s one of my favorites for good measure, from Britain’s The Mitchell and Webb Look.

Anyway, that’s all for now.

All the best,
